Beijing Strengthens Cooperation with Pacific Island Nations and Deepens Ties with Qatar

Beijing reaffirmed its commitment to expanding cooperation with Pacific Island countries, pledging to enhance collaboration across trade, governance, and sustainable development under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative. The announcement was made on Tuesday by Zhao Leji, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, during a meeting with delegates attending a seminar for Pacific Island legislators in Beijing.
Zhao said China is prepared to deepen mutually beneficial partnerships with the Pacific Island countries by aligning the Belt and Road Initiative with the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, a regional vision that focuses on sustainable growth, ocean resource protection, and climate resilience. He noted that ties between China and Pacific Island nations have continued to grow steadily in recent years, marked by increasing political trust, trade cooperation, and infrastructure projects.
The Chinese top legislator emphasized the importance of strengthening exchanges between legislative bodies, saying that legal and institutional collaboration could play a critical role in ensuring long-term stability and efficiency in bilateral partnerships. “China welcomes multi-level and multi-sector engagement to create a solid foundation for mutual development,” Zhao said.
Delegates from Pacific Island countries expressed appreciation for China’s continued support and reaffirmed their adherence to the one-China principle, which recognizes Beijing as the sole legal government of China. They also voiced their willingness to enhance cooperation with the National People’s Congress, particularly in governance, education, and sustainable development initiatives.
Analysts say China’s outreach to Pacific Island nations reflects its broader diplomatic vision of building inclusive regional partnerships that prioritize development, infrastructure, and climate adaptation. Many Pacific countries, facing challenges from rising sea levels and limited access to global markets, have welcomed China’s involvement in capacity-building and investment in renewable energy, connectivity, and maritime industries.
Meanwhile, Vice-President Han Zheng underscored China’s determination to strengthen cooperation with Qatar during a separate diplomatic meeting in Doha on Monday. Han met with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani on the sidelines of the Second World Summit for Social Development, where the two sides agreed to expand collaboration in energy, trade, finance, and social development.
Han highlighted that China and Qatar share a long-standing relationship grounded in mutual respect and complementary interests. He said that both countries are ready to elevate their strategic partnership by pursuing new opportunities in innovation, sustainable energy, and infrastructure.
Qatar, one of China’s key partners in the Middle East, has played an important role in energy cooperation and investment. The latest meeting signals continued commitment to deeper coordination under China’s Belt and Road framework, as well as joint efforts to address global challenges such as economic transformation and sustainable development.
Both diplomatic engagements this week with the Pacific Island nations and Qatar demonstrate China’s expanding network of partnerships across diverse regions. They also reflect Beijing’s broader effort to promote multilateral cooperation, economic inclusivity, and shared development at a time when global challenges require greater dialogue and collaboration.
