Bolsonaro Endorses Son Flavio’s Presidential Run While Recovering From Surgery

Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro has publicly backed his son Flavio’s bid for the presidency in 2026, issuing the endorsement from a hospital where he underwent a scheduled hernia operation that doctors said was successful.
The statement was released on Thursday as Bolsonaro recovered from surgery, marking a rare public intervention while he remains under strict legal restrictions. Medical staff said the procedure went smoothly and that the former leader was in stable condition following the operation.
Bolsonaro was temporarily allowed to leave prison for the surgery after authorisation from Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes. Bolsonaro is currently serving a 27 year sentence after being convicted of plotting a coup following his 2022 election defeat. As part of the court order, police were instructed to remain outside his hospital room, and the use of computers and mobile phones was prohibited during his stay.
Despite these constraints, Bolsonaro used the moment to signal his continued influence over Brazil’s conservative movement. In his message, he endorsed his eldest son, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, as the preferred candidate to carry forward his political legacy. The move underscores how Bolsonaro remains a central figure for right wing voters, even while behind bars.
Flavio Bolsonaro, 44, has already indicated his intention to run in the presidential election scheduled for October 4, 2026. He has said his campaign will focus on consolidating his father’s conservative agenda, including tough stances on crime, opposition to leftist economic policies, and a strong emphasis on national sovereignty.
The election is expected to be highly competitive, with Flavio aiming to challenge incumbent leftist president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who returned to office after narrowly defeating Jair Bolsonaro in 2022. Lula’s presidency has been marked by efforts to rebuild Brazil’s international standing and reverse many of Bolsonaro’s domestic policies.
Political analysts say Jair Bolsonaro’s endorsement could energise conservative voters who remain loyal to him, but it may also sharpen divisions in a country still deeply polarised. While Flavio has a national profile as a senator, he faces the challenge of appealing beyond his father’s base and addressing concerns about political dynasties and legal controversies.
For now, Bolsonaro’s message from hospital highlights his determination to remain politically relevant despite imprisonment and health issues. As Brazil begins to look toward the next election cycle, the endorsement signals that the Bolsonaro family intends to stay at the centre of the country’s political debate.
