Hong Kong rugby player appears in court over indecent assault and criminal damage charges

A professional rugby player in Hong Kong has been charged with indecent assault and criminal damage following an alleged incident at a bar in the city’s Central district and subsequent events while in police custody.

Faizal Solomona Penesa, a 33 year old Samoan national and registered rugby player in Hong Kong, appeared at Eastern Court on Friday for the first time to face the two charges. The case has drawn public attention amid renewed scrutiny of conduct by professional athletes and the handling of alleged criminal offences involving public figures.

According to prosecutors, Penesa is accused of indecently assaulting a patron at Bobby’s Rabble, a bar located in Central, on September 28 last year. The court heard that the alleged assault took place inside the venue during business hours, prompting staff and patrons to alert authorities. Details of the complainant were not disclosed during the brief hearing.

Prosecutors further alleged that after Penesa was taken into custody, he caused damage to a door bolt inside a police station. The criminal damage charge relates specifically to property damage said to have occurred while he was being detained, adding to the seriousness of the case.

During the hearing, Penesa did not enter a plea. The magistrate adjourned the case to allow time for further investigation and preparation by both the prosecution and defence.
