Melania Trump Chairs UN Security Council Meeting on Children and Conflict

Melania Trump presided over a United Nations Security Council meeting focused on children, technology and education in conflict, marking a historic first for the global body. It was the first time the spouse of a sitting world leader chaired a session of the 15 member council, which is responsible for maintaining international peace and security.
The meeting took place shortly after escalating tensions in the Middle East, following military strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran. The session had been scheduled before the attacks, but the timing placed additional attention on issues of civilian protection and child safety amid ongoing hostilities.
In her remarks to the council, the US first lady emphasized the importance of education as a foundation for tolerance and long term peace. She stated that the United States stands with children around the world and expressed hope that peace would soon be restored to communities affected by conflict. Her office said the objective of the meeting was to underline the role of education and technology in safeguarding young people during periods of instability.
The diplomatic context surrounding the session was highly charged. Iran’s representative to the United Nations accused the United States and Israel of responsibility for a strike on a girls primary school in southern Iran, alleging significant casualties. These claims have not been independently verified. Iranian officials described it as contradictory for Washington to convene a meeting on protecting children while conducting military operations.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States does not deliberately target schools. Israel’s UN ambassador also addressed the allegations, stating that while reports differed, Israel regretted any civilian loss of life.
The United Nations Children’s Fund warned that the broader escalation in the Middle East presents a dangerous moment for millions of children in the region. The agency reiterated calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities and urged all parties to prioritize the safety of civilians, especially minors. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has also called for restraint and renewed diplomatic engagement.
China’s ambassador to the United Nations noted during the meeting that attacks on schools constitute one of the grave violations against children identified by the international community. He stressed the need for thorough investigations and accountability where violations occur.
The meeting also reflected the current US presidency of the Security Council, which rotates monthly among member states. President Donald Trump has frequently criticized the United Nations in the past, arguing that reforms are needed. At the same time, US officials have described the decision for the first lady to chair the meeting as a signal of Washington’s engagement on issues related to children in armed conflict.
The session highlighted the intersection of geopolitics and humanitarian concerns, placing the protection of children at the center of a rapidly evolving international crisis.
