Turning social anxiety into a mission of compassion

A young woman from southwestern China has captured widespread attention after revealing how she overcame social anxiety by attending dozens of strangers’ wedding banquets to collect leftover food for stray cats. Over the past three years, her unusual routine has helped her care for more than one hundred and twenty abandoned cats while gradually rebuilding her confidence in social situations.
From isolation to quiet determination
The woman, known online as Xuanxuan, comes from Baoshan in Yunnan province. She once struggled with severe social anxiety while working part time as a video editor. Interacting with unfamiliar people caused intense stress, making everyday social activities difficult. For a long time, she kept largely to herself, limiting contact with others whenever possible.
Her life began to shift in the winter of twenty twenty two when she noticed stray cats shivering in the cold near her home. Moved by their condition, she began feeding them regularly. What started as a small act of kindness quickly grew into a serious commitment.
A home becomes a shelter
As more cats appeared, Xuanxuan took them in one by one. Over time, her home turned into an informal shelter housing more than one hundred and twenty cats. Feeding so many animals required a steady supply of food, and buying commercial pet food in large quantities was financially difficult.
That challenge led her to an unconventional solution that would also test her fear of social interaction.
Crashing wedding banquets
Xuanxuan began attending wedding banquets of people she did not know, carefully choosing large celebrations where food was likely to be left untouched. In China, wedding banquets often involve generous portions, with significant amounts remaining uneaten at the end of the event.
Over the past three years, she has attended around one hundred such banquets, roughly one every ten days. At some events, she was able to bring home as much as thirty kilograms of leftover food. She made sure the food had not been touched and repurposed it safely to feed the cats.
Facing fear one banquet at a time
Each banquet was more than a food collection trip. For Xuanxuan, it was a deliberate step outside her comfort zone. Entering crowded venues, navigating unfamiliar environments, and briefly interacting with strangers forced her to confront the anxiety she had long avoided.
Over time, the repeated exposure helped lessen her fear. While she still describes herself as shy, she says the sense of purpose made the discomfort manageable. Feeding the cats gave her a reason to keep showing up.
Viral attention and public reaction
Her story gained traction on social media, where many praised her creativity and compassion. Netizens expressed admiration for her dedication to animal welfare and her courage in finding a way to cope with mental health challenges. Some called her actions a powerful example of turning personal struggle into positive impact.
Others noted the broader issue of food waste, pointing out how her approach highlighted how much perfectly edible food is discarded at large events.
Balancing care and responsibility
Despite the attention, Xuanxuan remains focused on the cats. Caring for over one hundred animals is physically demanding and emotionally exhausting. She spends much of her time cleaning caring and ensuring the cats are healthy. She has said that while the work is hard, it gives her structure and a sense of meaning she lacked before.
She is careful to follow hygiene practices when handling leftover food and stresses that animal safety always comes first.
A quiet form of healing
Xuanxuan’s journey shows how healing can take unexpected forms. By combining her love for animals with small repeated acts of courage, she found a way to manage anxiety without pressure or grand gestures. Her story resonates because it is not about instant transformation but gradual progress.
Through caring for stray cats, she also learned to care for herself. In facing crowded banquet halls to collect leftovers, she discovered resilience and purpose, proving that even the most unconventional paths can lead to personal growth.
