Eastern Turn to Europe for New Head Coach After Roberto Losada’s Sudden Exit

Hong Kong Premier League club Eastern are set to search overseas for a new head coach after Roberto Losada left the club with immediate effect, bringing an abrupt end to a tenure that spanned several seasons and more than a hundred matches.
The decision was confirmed by Eastern in a statement released on Thursday, just days after Losada indicated he would step away from club football to focus on his new role with Hong Kong’s senior men’s national team. Losada was appointed interim head coach of the national side last week following the departure of Ashley Westwood and is scheduled to take charge of the team during the upcoming Guangdong Cup fixtures over the new year.
Eastern said both sides reached a mutual agreement to terminate Losada’s contract after discussions, clearing the way for a new chapter at the club. Assistant coach Cristiano Cordeiro will take over on a temporary basis while the search for a permanent replacement begins.
The club confirmed it will look toward Europe for its next head coach, a move that signals an intention to maintain a continental influence on its playing philosophy and development structure. Eastern officials did not provide a timeline for the appointment but said the process is already underway.
In its statement, the club paid tribute to Losada’s contribution, highlighting his ability to work within limited resources while still delivering competitive performances. Since officially taking charge, Losada led Eastern in 144 matches and played a key role in promoting young local players into the first team. The club credited him with guiding Eastern back onto the Asian stage, giving emerging Hong Kong talent valuable exposure at a higher level.
Losada’s departure comes at a delicate point in the season, with Eastern balancing domestic ambitions and longer term development goals. While results have been mixed, the club has remained committed to building around youth, a strategy that has defined much of Losada’s time in charge.
For Losada, the move allows him to concentrate fully on his national team responsibilities. His appointment as interim Hong Kong head coach has been seen as an opportunity to inject continuity and familiarity into the setup, particularly with several Eastern players also featuring in the national squad. Managing both roles simultaneously would have posed logistical and strategic challenges, making the separation inevitable.
Eastern’s decision to look abroad reflects a broader trend among Hong Kong clubs seeking experienced coaches who can blend tactical discipline with player development. European coaches have traditionally been viewed as well suited to working in resource constrained environments while focusing on structure and youth progression.
Supporters have reacted with a mix of gratitude and uncertainty. Many acknowledged Losada’s impact on nurturing young players, while others expressed concern about the timing of the change and the short term disruption it may cause.
As Cristiano Cordeiro steps in on an interim basis, attention will quickly shift to who Eastern choose as their next leader. With expectations to remain competitive domestically and continue developing local talent, the appointment will be closely watched as the club charts its next phase.
